Equipment
The Frontenac Fire Department Volunteers utilize up to five emergency vehicles and a rescue boat to provide emergency fire response for the City of Frontenac, as well as provide mutual aid assistance to surrounding communities.Firefighters also wear protective equipment to keep themselves separated from the heat and flames that are involved within a fire. This gear consists of a bunker coat & pants, steel toe boots, helmet, gloves, and breathing apparatus. The coat, pants, and helmet have reflective stripes along the sides, to allow the firefighters to be highly visible at night. The breathing apparatus known as an SCBA, allows the firefighter to breath inside a fire, or when the air is too toxic to breath. The bottle or tank is attached to a frame that resembles a backpack. The end of the hose on the tank goes up to the facemask where he/she can breath fresh clean air. In 2008, The Fire Department applied for and received a grant to purchase a set of vehicle extrication tools. The grant allowed the purchase of approximately $ 21,000 worth of equipment. With the community of Frontenac growing rapidly, and vehicle accidents an inevitable occurrence, these tools will become an essential part of our rescue process. |
