| Are you a paid fire department? |
No. All of our firefighters, except for the chief, are volunteers. The chief often volunteers his own time at the fire station.
| What is a volunteer firefighter? |
A volunteer firefighter is any member of our community who has chosen to help and serve the community by becoming a firefighter without receiving a paycheck in return.
| Who is on duty right now? |
Our firefighters are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Personnel are not waiting at the station to respond, they are alerted via pagers and then respond to the station within minutes, then respond to the incident scene on fire trucks.
| How do you get alerted or dispatched when there is an emergency? |
When someone places an emergency call to 911 for fire or rescue services, the dispatcher sends out alerting tones to the pagers each firefighter wears. The page contains basic information regarding the type of emergency and the address to respond to. All available firefighters then have only minutes to respond to the station, get dressed and get the trucks on the road to respond to the call for help.
| Where do volunteer firefighters receive their training? |
All of our firefighters receive regular training at the Frontenac Fire Station. Firefighters are encouraged to attend courses that offer more in depth techniques in firefighting. However our firefighters do attend regular training drills on the first and third Thursday of each month to ensure they can conduct themselves in a safe and most effective manner.
| How many fire calls do you have each year? |
The Frontenac Volunteer Fire Department responds to an average of 60 calls for emergency assistance annually. These calls can be anything from a faulty fire alarm to a building fire, or a vehicle accident.
| Do you ever respond with fire trucks outside of Frontenac? |
Yes, Frontenac Fire Department does send trucks and personnel when needed to other surrounding communities when there is a major incident. In turn, other surrounding communities send trucks and personnel to Frontenac to help us when we have a major incident.
| What is mutual aid? |
This is an area wide system that ensures that additional equipment and manpower are dispatched to a major incident from surrounding communities while making sure that all of the other communities still have adequate protection during major incidents. This system enables fire companies to call for and get additional help, and provide coverage when needed, to other fire companies.
