Department News

Building Addition

Thanks to the citizens of Frontenac, Crossland Construction, and many others involved, the Fire department as well as the Police department will be housed in one building. This addition is a great achievement not only to us but to the citizens of Frontenac. Now Police and Fire can work together, faster, more economically, and more efficiently than before. Along with the new building addition, the Dispatch center will receive a new state of the art dispatch console, allowing for quicker and more clear communications between personnel. The Fire department will receive an additional two truck bays, as well as a training room, and a meeting room among other additions. The Police department will receive all new offices, a garage to house the patrol cars, as well as an evidence room, and a safe room. Both departments will share the upstairs space of the building to be set up as a weight training area.

This is a major step to bringing the city of Frontenac the best fire and police protection that you have depended on in years past and will depend on for years to come. Thank you for the support!

Extrication Equipment

The Fire Department has applied for and received a grant from the Federal Government to purchase a set of vehicle extrication tools, like the ones pictured on the right. They have granted us half of the cost of this vital rescue equipment, valued around $21,000. The remaining half was to be collected by donations from the community, within one year of the grant approval. With the community of Frontenac growing rapidly, and vehicle accidents an inevitable occurrence, this tool will become an essential part of our rescue process.

Currently, the only available vehicle with rescue equipment is housed at Crawford County EMS Station 3, on 4th Street, in Pittsburg. With its current setup, after an emergency call has been placed, a designated off duty EMT must get to the station in Pittsburg, usually from Girard, and then drive the vehicle to the incident scene, by his or her self, leaving the responding fire department responsible to run the equipment. If our department had this extrication equipment, commonly known as the "Jaws of Life", rescue time would cut in more than half, not having to wait for the rescue truck to get on scene before we can begin assisting the victim(s). Also by having the equipment, it gives us the opportunity to train in extrication and rescue techniques that can better our department, ensuring we are best trained for the incident at hand. The expected re-opening of Camptown further increases this need, as it is located on the highway, with a poor entry and exit, leaving it very accident prone.

The Frontenac Fire Department greatly appreciates your donations, and will return the favor to the community through the use of this life saving equipment along with all other equipment by making the city of Frontenac one of the safest communities in Southeast Kansas.
