James Kennedy has served as Frontenac's Mayor since 1997. Prior to being Mayor, Kennedy served on several Planning and Zoning Boards around the area including Crawford County, KS, Newton County, MO, and Neosho, MO. He was instrumental in developing a Planning and Zoning Board for Frontenac and served on the board until becoming Mayor. He is currently on the Board of Directors of the Pittsburg Area Chamber of Commerce.

Frontenac's Mayor is elected every two years in a General Election. The Mayor serves in various roles of the city government including city growth and financial planning, presiding over City Council meetings, supervision and evaluation of the various department heads and their staff as well as the many day-to-day tasks of running a city.

Mayor Kennedy attended specialized training courses at the University of Illinois and achieved the highest certifications in diesel and electrical motors which he used during his 28 years with the Kansas City Southern railroad. Most of his years with KCS were spent as a supervisor. Since becoming Mayor, he has continued his education by achieving certification from Homeland Security in Incident Command System and Disaster Management.
