One of the Mount Carmel Mines, formerly the Cherokee and Pittsburg Coal and Mining Company, located in the Frontenac area.

The Animal Control's main purpose is the safety and care of lost, abandoned, or mistreated dogs in the city of Frontenac. The Police Department appoints an officer to handle duties as Animal Control Officer. The officer's duties include picking up dogs, maintaining their proper care and housing, vaccination against rabies, and city licensing. This department is dedicated to the assurance of humane treatment of all animals.

It is unlawful for any dog to run at large within the city limits at any time. Owners of dogs that run at large may be cited and must appear in Municipal Court.

The Department maintains an animal shelter which is located at 807 W. McKay for the housing of dogs picked up by the police. The shelter handles approximately 50 dogs each year. The shelter is licensed and inspected by the Kansas Animal Health Department to ensure that safe and sanitary conditions are constantly present.

Forbidden Dogs in the City Limits

City Ordinance #98-004 passed in 1998 forbids the ownership of certain breeds of dogs within the city limits, namely Pit Bull and Rotweiller breeds. For those owning these breeds of dogs at the time of the adoption of the ordinance, the requirements are briefly worded as follows: 

Dogs must be confined indoors or in a securely enclosed and padlocked pen or kennel. 
Pen must have secure sides, top, and must have a secured floor attached or pen sides must be imbedded into the ground no less than two (2) feet. 
 
Premises must be posted with signs using the words "BEWARE OF DOG". 
 
Owners must register dogs with the Police Department by: 
1. Providing two color photographs of dog 
2. Provide proof of $ 50,000 liability insurance 
3. Rabies Vaccine verification 
4. Purchase of a dog tag
