Police FAQ

How do I become a police officer?
Most police departments require a basic education such as a high school diploma or GED. Additional education such as an Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree is recommended. Police work requires a high state of physical and mental fitness and many departments require physical and mental evaluations. A background check is always done and those convicted of serious or multiple violations of the law are usually rejected. Many states including Kansas require a person to be employed by a police department before allowing them into the police academy for basic training. Once an officer completes the police academy, continuing education hours are mandatory each year. More information can be found by clicking here.

How many calls do you receive per year?
Police dispatchers receive many phone calls each day related to everything from traffic accidents to property disputes to animals running at-large. Because of the police department's convenient location, many people walk in to address their issues. Last year the police department completed 455 case reports representing 492 crimes including 90 felonies, 228 misdemeanors and 111 non-criminal incidents. Nearly two-thirds of all cases resulted in an arrest. Frontenac Police also completed 85 motor vehicle accident reports.

Is someone at the police department to answer phone calls at night?
Police dispatchers are at the station ready to answer calls 24 hours-a-day.

Do you have a reserve officer program?
Reserve Officers are essential to the workings of the police department. Reserve Officers are volunteers that come in on a scheduled basis to assist the patrol officers with their regular duties. Reserves are trained by the officers in-house starting with dispatch. More information can be found by contacting Assistant Chief Randy Flora at the police department by calling 231-9216.

How do I report a crime that has occured?
Many people choose to walk in to the police department or others can call directly. 911 calls are handled by Crawford County dispatchers and relayed to Frontenac dispatchers.

Can I get a copy of a police or accident report?
You may request the front page of an Offense Report or Accident report by walking in or writing to the Frontenac Police Department. A small handling fee may apply.
